Shoshone Irrigation District
A fast-acting, non-copper treatment eliminated algae and maintained reliable irrigation flow under strict environmental regulations.
THE CHALLENGE
Operational Disruptions Under Strict Environmental Limits
The Shoshone Irrigation District delivers water to more than 35,000 acres of farmland in northern Wyoming. Within a 1.8 acre-foot canal near Powell, recurring filamentous algae created significant operational challenges.
Algae mats accumulated throughout the season, then broke loose and moved downstream, clogging irrigation intakes and disrupting water delivery during critical periods. Copper-based algaecides could not be used due to federal regulations and Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) limits tied to the Shoshone River, forcing the district to find an alternative that would not compromise compliance or flow reliability.

THE SOLUTION
A Fast-Acting, Non-Copper Algaecide Application
After evaluating non-copper options, the district selected Oximycin® P5, a peroxide-based algaecide designed for irrigation systems.
On August 2, 2022, the product was applied as an undiluted surface spray directly onto algae mats at the treatment site. Application rates were based on the canal’s water volume rather than flow rate, targeting surface growth before additional biomass could accumulate or break loose and cause downstream issues.

Rapid Algae Elimination and Reliable Water Delivery
A single, targeted application quickly reduced algae biomass and prevented further operational disruptions during peak irrigation demand.
